It's said that California has 4 seasons; Rain, drought, fire and earthquake. Winter rain turns mountainsides green in March, which then slowly turn into tinder over the summer, which Santa Anna winds whip into firestorms in the the fall. My personal nightmare is to be in LA during mudslides or fire when the big earthquake hits.

As my California friends tell me, fire is a natural component of California, from the Redwood forests to the desert hills. It is necessary, and unavoidable, but the most fearsome of all the seasons.
