Portland progressives demand the resignation of Mayor Ted Wheeler, after being accused of allowing tear gas and excessive force on protestors. Protesters held a self-described “block party” outside of Wheeler’s upscale apartment, on his birthday. Video footage shows protesters attempting to burn down the apartment complex. Signs such as “tear gas teddy” and “black lives matter” all present during this “party”.

The police declared a riot following the destruction outside of the building and arrested 19 individuals mostly for disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer.

It seems the left and right have come to a consensus regarding the responsibility of violence in the city of Portland.

Progressives advocate for Wheeler to be replaced with Teressa Raiford. She is the founder of “Don't Shoot PDX”, which has sued the local government and its authorities multiple times in recent months due to claims of authorizing excessive force. Portland Democratic Socialists of America recently wrote a letter to the administration demanding the resignation of Wheeler.

As President Trump stated earlier this week, “Portland will never recover with a fool for a mayor…he tried mixing with the agitators and anarchists and they mocked him. He would like to blame me and the federal government for going in, but he hasn’t seen anything yet.”

This was following the mayor’s refusal to accept federal assistance from the national guard.

“Do you seriously wonder, Mr. President, why this is the first time in decades that America has seen this level of violence? It’s you who have created the hate and the division,” Wheeler claimed.

Wheeler goes on to say “It’s you who have not found a way to say the names of black people killed by police officers, even as people in law enforcement have, and it’s you who claimed that white supremacists are good people.”

It’s important to note that the statement above follows the recent killing of a Trump supporter, Aaron Danielson, in Portland earlier this week.

On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary, Chad Wolf, wrote a letter to Wheeler advising that he accept federal assistance or DHS will have no choice but to get involved. “I urge you to prioritize public safety and to request federal assistance to restore law and order in Portland.”

“We are standing by to support Portland. At the same time, President Trump has made it abundantly clear that there will come a point when state and local officials fail to protect its citizens from violence, the federal government will have no choice but to protect our American citizens.”

The future seems to be troublesome for Portland. It’s clear that the local government has failed once again to take control or claim responsibility for the recent events.
